Mr. Google goes to Washington

Posted Mar 1, 09:50 AM by tpiddy

I know not everyone spends as much time as me watching CSPAN and CSPAN2 (I don’t get CSPAN3 on cable), but this television rules the nation. If you have been watching your Congressional hearings like a good citizen you may have noticed something recently. Representatives of Google has been testifying before committees quite a bit lately.

You would have seen Dr. Cerf
“Allowing broadband carriers to reserve huge amounts of bandwidth for their own services will not give consumers the broadband Internet our country and economy need,” ... “Promoting an open and accessible Internet is critical for consumers. It is also critical to our nation’s competitiveness—in places like Japan, Korea, Singapore, and the United Kingdom; higher-bandwidth and neutral broadband platforms are unleashing waves of innovation that threaten to leave the U.S. further and further behind.”

Can Google out-lobby the behemoth of donations and K street that are Verizon, BellSouth and AT&T? Does their lack of previous lobbying and brand appeal give them more weight in Washington? The only previous lobbying by Google I could find was through Public Policy Partners, LLC.

It is too bad the decisions and debate that that decide these important matters are run by this geezer.

Mr. Geezer Ted Stevens
